Discharging excess nitrate concentration in water bodies contributes to eutrophication. Golden apple snail shell (GAS) was utilized as an adsorbent for nitrate treatment from aqueous solution by a batch system. The efficiency of nitrate removal is found to increase with high temperature calcination (800°C) of the adsorbent. The nitrate adsorption rate reached equilibrium time within 2 hours and had a removal efficiency of 84%. The nitrate adsorption capacity of the adsorbent was 3.62 mg g -1 . Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area analysis, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive x-ray spectrometer (SEM-EDS), x-ray diffraction (XRD), and x-ray fluorescence spectrometer (XRF) were used for characterization of the specific surface area, morphological features, structure, and chemical composition of the adsorbent, respectively. EDS analysis on the surface of adsorbent was conducted before and after adsorption and revealed the potential that the nitrate in the solution was co-precipitated with calcium carbonate-based GAS to calcium nitrate forming. The adsorption mechanism fitted well with the Langmuir model. These results reveal the ability of high calcium adsorbent with high nitrate adsorption capacity. The GAS could be applied as an adsorbent to remove nitrate from domestic and industrial wastewater. It is a new material, environmentally friendly, low cost, and an alternative material to use in wastewater treatment plant. Although the adsorption capacity obtained in this study is moderate compared with some engineered adsorbents reported in the literature, the material offers advantages in terms of low cost, waste reutilization, simple preparation, and environmental sustainability. Further investigations involving coexisting ions, real wastewater matrices, and activation treatment are recommended to improve the practical applicability and adsorption performance of the material.
