This research explores the potential of using macadamia nutshell char (MNC) as a catalyst for steam reforming of liquid waste oil (WO). MNC is characterized by a low ash content relative to other biomass types, which helps in minimizing operational burden such as slagging, sintering, corrosion, and fouling during thermochemical conversions. Owing to its high carbon content, WO is a suitable feedstock for steam reforming to produce synthesis gas. In this study, MNC was pyrolyzed to obtain biochar possessing a porous structure rich in micro and mesopores. Subsequently, bimetallic Ni-Cu/MNC catalysts were synthesized using the obtained biochar as support material. Steam reforming of WO was conducted in a fixed bed reactor using the synthesized catalysts to improve the product gas quality, and the influence of metal catalyst loading on the char support was investigated. The reforming performance was investigated under operating conditions of 800°C, S/C ratio of 1:1, and WHSV of 5.64 h -1 . The results showed that the 5%Ni/MNC catalyst produced syngas with a high CH₄ fraction, whereas the bimetallic 5%Ni-5%Cu/MNC catalyst achieved the highest carbon (66.19%) and hydrogen (72.65%) conversion. Under these conditions, the conversions of carbon to CO and hydrogen to H 2 were 15.07% and 32.99%, respectively, with H 2 /CO molar ratio of 2.19 and a lower heating value of 5.28 MJ/m 3 . Overall, these findings highlighted the potential of MNC as support for metal catalyst. Moreover, the Ni-Cu active sites on the char support demonstrated enhanced catalytic activity and reduced carbon deposition. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that MNC is a viable, low-ash catalyst support, offering a promising and environmentally friendly pathway for converting waste materials into valuable syngas.
