The Water-Energy-Food (WEF) nexus is now a key framework for understanding how water, energy, and food resources depend on one another in pursuing sustainable development. This scoping review examines the methods, geographical distribution, policy recommendations, and research gaps in one part of this literature. Following PRISMA-ScR guidelines and a predefined protocol, open-access, peer-reviewed empirical and review articles indexed in PubMed and Scopus between 2019 and 2024 were screened; 23 met all eligibility criteria. The findings, therefore, reflect the open-access, empirical segment of nexus research, not the full WEF nexus literature. Integrated assessment and statistical methods, together with stakeholder analysis, appear most often; system dynamics and optimization, less frequently. The studies span Africa, Asia, Europe, South America, and multi-national settings, with particular attention to regions under severe resource stress. Stakeholder engagement is consistently seen as essential for implementation, yet data limitations, institutional fragmentation, and weak cross-sectoral coordination remain the main obstacles. Despite varied contexts, recommendations converge on integrated governance, cross-sectoral coordination, and adaptive management, a pattern traceable to the methods themselves, which shapes how problems and solutions are defined. Across all methodological categories, social dimensions such as power, equity, gender, and the lived experience of resource insecurity at the household and community levels receive too little attention. Future work should develop standardized frameworks, involve stakeholders more fully, sustain long-term monitoring, and adapt to specific contexts. Most importantly, it should pair quantitative trade-off analysis with qualitative, participatory, and social science approaches that bring power, inequality, gender, and local experience into view.
