Information from the abstract
Tropocyclops laorsriae sp. nov. is described from a freshwater habitat in Chanthaburi Province, eastern Thailand. The new species belongs to Kiefer’s Quaterni group, with the P1–P4 Exp-3 spine formula of 3.4.4.3, and shows affinities with species currently associated with the T. prasinus complex. It differs from T. ishidai Lee & Chang, 2007, T. setulifer Lee & Chang, 2007, and other allied congeners by a distinctive combination of characters: the female seminal receptacle has a broad, rounded anterior part and a bilobed posterior expansion; the P4 intercoxal sclerite bears a characteristic pattern of spinules; and P5 is broad and subrectangular, with three elements and 6–7 large spinules on the inner distal surface. The antennal basis also shows a distinct spinule pattern useful for comparison with closely related Asian species. The discovery of the new species suggests that regional diversity within the T. prasinus complex may have been underestimated because of the general morphological similarity among allied taxa.
