This study presents a sustainable approach to enhancing the water repellency of cotton fabrics using banana leaf-extracted wax in combination with cationic starch via a layer-by-layer (LbL) deposition technique. The coated fabrics exhibited significantly increased water contact angles with higher wax concentrations, indicating effective water resistance. The highest contact angle recorded was 124.18°, achieved with a 10% (w/v) cationic starch layer followed by a 5% (w/v) banana wax coating. Cationic starch enhanced coating uniformity, adhesion, and mechanical strength. While improved hydrophobicity was observed, higher wax content resulted in reduced air and water vapor permeability due to increased surface coverage. Minimal changes in color and a slight increase in fabric thickness were also noted. Furthermore, the optimized coating showed good washing durability, retaining 88.24% of its initial water contact angle after 20 laundering cycles. Overall, these findings demonstrate that the cationic starch/banana leaf wax coating is an effective, biodegradable, and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional synthetic water-repellent finishes, providing a promising route toward the development of sustainable textile finishing technologies.
