In Thailand, physicians and pharmacists have distinct professional roles; however, their responsibilities are closely interconnected. Effective communication between these professionals is crucial, as conflicts in their communication can adversely affect the benefit of patients. This research explored pharmacists’ perspectives on conflict in physician-pharmacist communication that potentially affects the benefits of patients in general hospitals under the Ministry of Public Health. A mixed-methods approach with a convergent parallel design was used in this study. Qualitative data were collected through in-depth interviews with five experienced pharmacists (> 10 years of experience) selected via purposive sampling. Quantitative data were obtained using self-administered questionnaires distributed to 460 pharmacists in general hospitals. The research focused on two main areas: (i) communication types (formal, informal, one-way, and two-way) and (ii) communication methods (face-to-face, phone calls, progress notes, meetings, official/unofficial documents, and electronic media). A total of 232 pharmacists responded to the survey (response rate: 50.4%), with 200 completed questionnaires included in the final analysis. Qualitative results indicated that communication conflicts affecting patient benefits were at a low-to-moderate level, while quantitative results showed an overall low level of conflict. Analysis of communication types and methods revealed minimal conflict when using two-way communication, particularly through face-to-face interaction. Based on the results, the author suggests that organizational policies need to be revised in order to effectively manage and minimize communication conflicts between pharmacists and physicians. This will improve patient care coordination and increase patient benefits. Communication is crucial in the collaboration of multidisciplinary teams. Conflict in communication between physicians and pharmacists can lead to adverse outcomes for patients. Therefore, it is necessary to adjust the types and methods of communication to accommodate various limitations and obstacles for the benefit of patients. Organizational policy planning is necessary to manage and prevent conflict in physician-pharmacist communication in the future.
