Information from the abstract
Rural tourism has become a vital driver of rural revitalisation, but few studies have explored the links among social capital, sustainable tourism development, and tourism community resilience. Using social capital theory, this study developed an integrated model with four key socio-organisational variables (place attachment, community participation, tourism industry innovation, and leadership) and two outcomes (sustainable rural tourism development, SDT, and tourism community resilience, TCR). Data were collected through 522 questionnaires from stakeholders at six rural tourism sites across Shaanxi Province, China, and analyzed with structural equation modelling. The findings revealed that all four socio-organisational variables positively influenced SDT and TCR, with SDT partially mediating the relationships between these variables and TCR. This study viewed sustainable tourism not only as an outcome but also as a process of turning local social resources into long-term adaptive capacity for tourism. It offers new insights into social capital and tourism resilience, based on a large-scale empirical study in Chinese rural settings, and provides governance recommendations for local officials and tourism destination managers.
