Abstract This study compared pilot-scale mechanical screw pressing and supercritical CO 2 (SC-CO 2 ) extraction for recovering oil and producing protein-rich meal from black soldier fly (BSF; Hermetia illucens ) at two developmental stages: fifth-instar white larvae and sixth-instar black prepupae. Results for composition are reported on a wet basis unless otherwise stated. SC-CO 2 recovered 26.5% oil from white larvae and 19.0% from prepupae, compared with 19.6% and 15.4%, respectively, for screw pressing ( ) and the resulting oils contained a greater proportion of unsaturated fatty acids. Lauric acid (43-58 g/100 g oil) predominated in all oils. SC-CO 2 -defatted meals contained 55-58% protein and 1.8-2.5% residual lipid and showed greater foaming capacity and water absorption than screw-press meals ( ); screw-press meals showed greater emulsification capacity and higher protein digestibility-corrected amino acid scores ( ). In vitro protein digestibility exceeded 0.96 for all meals. Tryptophan and sulphur amino acids limited the amino acid scores of SC-CO 2 and screw-press meals, respectively. Salmonella spp. and Staphylococcus aureus were not detected and heavy metals were quantified at low mg/kg concentrations. The two processes therefore produced complementary ingredient profiles: continuous screw pressing offered approximately 50 kg/h throughput and meals with stronger emulsifying performance, whereas batch SC-CO 2 processing (20 kg over 6 h) achieved more extensive defatting and stronger foaming performance. Selection between the technologies should consequently be based on the intended ingredient functionality, production capacity and a product-specific techno-economic assessment.
